Rosquillos Festival 2009

May 26, 2009

You are invited to come and celebrate the colors and delicious ringlet cookies of taga liloan, the Rosquillos Festival 2009.

As this year 2009, they are thankful to there beloved patron Saint. Sr. San Fernando Rey, A king and Saint for giving them the wealth and peace for there community.

What is the story behind the Rosquillos?

The making of these little ringlet cookies date back to April 3, 1907, when the then 21-year-old Margarita “Titay” Frasco was tinkering in her kitchen with her baking ingredients and made her new culinary creation.

Kneading the dough manually and using a wooden eggbeater, some baking tins and a clay oven, little did the 21-year-old know that she was starting a product that would put her little town in the national and international map of gastronomic delight.

The market for her unnamed cookie started with her neighbors and passersby who were offered the snack as a freebie for every purchase of a bottle of soda. It was then Cebu governor Sergio Osmeña, who later became Philippine president, who gave it the name rosquillos after the Spanish word rosca.

As years passed, people going to northern Cebu have made it a habit to drop by the store to buy the rosquillos. It is also a known fact that those who couldn’t visit Cebu would ask friends who are in Cebu to buy some for them.

Rosquillos have become a household name, a product that is aptly celebrated in a festival that Liloan could call its very own.

Pinoy Expats-OFW BLog awards 2009

May 22, 2009

Any successful endeavor is worth repeating and much more sustained. Especially when it touches and inspires the lives of the people for whom it dedicate its toils, pain, and achievements. Such are the motivations for which the 2009 Top 10 Pinoy Expat/OFW Blog Award (PEBA) is once again being launched online. Wikipedia mention of PEBA here.

In its second year, PEBA will recognize Pinoy Expats and OFWs bloggers making a difference in their lives, workplace, community, the Philippines and the world in general.

This year the theme is

“Filipinos Abroad – Hope of the Nation, Gift to the World”.

Cognizant and directly affected by the brunt of global financial crisis, Filipinos continue to anchor their hope and trust to their family members abroad as herald of better news and good tidings. Thus, reinforcing the OFWs and Filipino expats role and image as new heroes and saviors.
PEBA also recognizes that Filipinos wherever they are, be it land-based, sea-based or air-based as the case maybe, are shining examples of dedication, diligence, and excellence in almost anything they do. It is not uncommon for them to be praised as assets to companies and organizations contributing to the social and economic well being of their host country. PEBA considers the more than 12m overseas Filipinos scattered abroad as gifts to make this world a better place to live.

The award which started last year had a very simple objective. It was created to award bloggers who infuses enthusiasm and inspiration for others to do good and be hopeful in this world of hopelessness. Filipino expats and OFWs with their talents, means, resources and blogs unfailingly served as voice and beacon of hope. Ten top bloggers were identified from around the globe such as the Americas, Europe, Africa and Middle East, and Asia and the Pacific, who, up until these days continue to blog and their commitment re-ignited in contributing change through their own little ways.

So for this year with the valuable help of numerous individuals from around the globe, the search is on again. Filipino bloggers and netizens are invited to recognize Pinoy Expats/OFW who tireless blog in making the blogosphere a better space and place for exchange, discussion, and service of the Filipinos and the citizens of the world alike. It is worth knowing and learning those stories of Filipinos overcoming difficulties and challenges. Although it is a reality that not everyone is successful but still their stories are way for others to gain insight from their life lessons and experiences.

From May to October 2009 any Filipino blogger can nominate or be nominated except for last year’s top 10 PEBA awardees. Guidelines are available from its official blogsite (click here). By December 2009 winners will be announced in a public event in the Philippines whose details are still being prepared and ironed out. Sponsors, supporters and volunteers are very much welcome to make this endeavor a success.
Be part of another historic event of Pinoy Expats and OFWs!

The Success of Kagasangan Festival 2009

May 16, 2009

Picture from http://sugbo.gov.ph
CEBU, Philippines - To further boost its tourism industry, the Municipality of Moalboal yesterday launched its first “Kagasangan Festival” to showcase the local people’s way of expressing and valuing, in a creative way, the town’s identity as a premier tourist destination due to the richness of its marine natural resources.

Dancers in their colorful and coral-inspired costumes danced in the tune and beat of the song “Kagasangan,” which was arranged and composed intentionally for such purpose.

The festival, which highlighted the town’s fiesta celebration, was participated by the different barangays clustered into five groups. The grand price was bagged by the “Grupo Banawog” of the Cebu State College of Science and Technology-Fisheries representing barangays Poblacion East, Tunga and Bugho.

“Kagasangan” which means “corals” is one of the reasons why the town is dubbed as a diving capital of the country. It is also believed to cause the abundance of fish catch in the town since it serves as the nursery ground for small fishes.

Officials of the municipality headed by Mayor Yvonne Cabaron and the province headed by Governor Gwendolyn Garcia have thought of creating the festival to further boost the tourism industry in the town.

It is also their way of preserving the history and culture of the people of Moalboal as it will be a constant reminder for them that their wealth and economy greatly depend on the richness of their marine resources.

Through it, people are expected to develop an intensified love for the marine environment that they will urge themselves to protect it better.

The rich marine ecosystem in the coastal waters of Moalboal has become one of the town’s most popular tourist attractions that is sustaining the livelihood of most of its residents.

The first Kagasangan Festival has united the whole community of Moalboal to make the town more popular and wealthy culturally and naturally. It will be observed every year simultaneous with the fiesta of their Patron Saint San Juan Nepomuceno.

Moalboal lies in Southwest coast of Cebu and is approximately 89 kilometers from the Cebu City.

The coastal town’s fine white sand beaches and the rich underwater marine ecosystem have attracted divers from all over the world.

May 2, 2009

Mandaue City, Cebu — The local government of Mandue City has officially launched this year’s Mantawi Festival to celebrate the Madauehanon and emphasize the city’s culture, heritage and tourist attractions amid the current global financial crisis.

Mayor Jonas Cortes said the current financial squeeze will not hinder the city from celebrating its annual festivity, adding that the event prioritizes its religious aspect anyway.

“Our annual fiesta is our way of expressing our gratitude to our patron Saint Joseph for the countless and wonderful blessings that are continually showered to our city and to the rest of the Mandauehanons,” he said.

Cortes said the Mantawi Festival is also a celebration of the heritage, culture and tradition of every Mandauehanon.

He said his administration was very lucky because despite the crisis, almost all sectors and organizations have stood up to volunteer, help and donate for the success of this year’s fiesta, including Mandauehanons based abroad.

Major highlights of the celebration include the Miss Mandaue Pageant Night and the 1st International Convention of Taga-Mandaue among other lined up activities that will surely entertain tourist and visitors during the month-long fiesta.

Hinatdan Festival

A Festival of History, Arts and Culture .. A Festival of Life ... a Festival of Thanksgiving, Hope and Oneness of Ginatilanons.

The word "Hinatdan" is taken from an old Cebuano root word "Hatod" meaning to send and "Hinatdan" means an act of sending something.

History recalls that the present Ginatilan was once a barrio of the town of Samboan and the town was the main seat of the Roman Catholic Parish. Since the barrio had a lot of parishioners, the main parish of Samboan had extended its religious activities and services for the people's convenience by asssigning a Spanish priest in the area and later organized his (priest) own parish but still under the jurisdiction of the main Samboan Parish.

Due to the problem of supplies and materials for the priest's religious services in the barrio, ecclesiatical things like priest's vestments, church garments, religious items and even his means of subsistence were often sent to him from Samboan to the barrio. As the parishioners would say "Ang among pari, hinatdan gyud na siya sa iyang kagamitan ug mga kinahanglanon aron motonhay ang iyang pag-alagad sa Dios ug mga barriohanon."

Since that time the barrio folks always remember the place as "Hinatdan" because they often see that things had been sent to the priest. One folk would ask "Asa ka moadto?" and it was being answered "Moadto ko sa Hinatdan" meaning the place where things were being sent to the priest.

In the lapse of time, "Hinatdan" became a popular name of the barrio. As the years go by, the name "Hinatdan" evolved to become "Ginatilan" today.

In the making of a cultural festival of Ginatilan at present, "Hinatdan" was rightfully chosen as the name of the festival because of its historical and religious value.

"Hinatdan" can be considered as the general term, an act of progress and development. Aside from the above mentioned historical and religious accounts, we can aptly say that today Ginatilan is "Hinatdan sa mga butang alang sa kalamboan ug kauswagan. Hinatdan sa mga maayo, makugihon ug mahigugmaong katawhan. Hinatdan sa mga bahandi sa dagat ug kayutaan ug hinatdan sa mga grasya sa kahitas-an."

"Hinatdan" is the fitting name of the festival because it portrays a significant notion of the place itself. It inspires and encourages the townfolks to work harder and do things for the best in life, so that the fruits of their labor and dedication can be sent to the community and for them to cherish and be proud of. "Hinatdan" is an act of good service to God and to the Community. It is a festival of history, a festival of arts and culture of Ginatilanon and a festival of life.
