The first ever Lawihan Festival 2009 of Malapascua Island Daanbantayan Cebu. It was launched in May 11, 2009.

Lawihan Festival is inspired by the word of elongated tail called "lawi". Lawi is a thresher shark that can only be found in Malapascua Island.

There are 8 contingents who are competing for Lawihan Festival 2009. The dancers will be showcasing how Malapascua Island is bountiful with its own nature and culture, also they will be portraying how divers will see thresher shark in Malapascua, particularly the Monad Shoal dive site.

According to Greeg Rubio, tourism officer of Daabantayan "the festival launching was done successfully and it will be more added to the identity of Malapascua Island."

The beauty of festivals was done by the dancers through wearing island nature props and costume. There festival is offered also to there beloved Patron Saint Birhen delos Desamparados.
